Is This the End of Uniform Catwalk Hairstyles

Since the end of the highly individualist 90s catwalks and their supermodels, the trend has always been towards a uniform hairstyle for all girls walking at a certain fashion show. If one designer wants long banged hair on his models, then even those with pixie cuts wear a similar wig or extensions.

Along with makeup, hair is monotonously uniform, incorporated in the creative director’s seasonal vision. Olivier Rousteing – despite him being pro-diversity – has best phrased this enduring reality by calling his girls the ‘Balmain army.’ Yet over the last season, we saw many hints at desired differentiation potentially kicking off an era of versatility on the catwalks!

Natural Hair

At Tommy Hilfiger, girls – even those with afro curls – wore their hair natural, without too much styling, rather more of a healthy feel that complements ideally their youthful features. Lots of afro-chic short hairstyles alluding to Lupita Nyongo’s signature look appeared at the shows of Adam Selman and Creatures of the Winds.

The trend for a ‘come as you are’ hairstyle was rather popular for many more years in New York and London catwalks, yet it’s one of the first seasons we see it equally vividly during the Milan Fashion Week.
