Dress to Impress on Your Job Interview

Today’s job market is tough, and when you land an interview you want to make sure you do whatever you can to make a great impression. A lot of people focus on their resume and question answers for their interview and think that it’s enough to make a good impression. Yet most interviewers say that a person’s appearance matters quite a bit when they make their decisions. You need to put plenty of thought and attention toward your appearance when you head out for a job interview.

Call Ahead

If you’re someone who has been out of the job market for a while, you might have no idea what to wear or what is expected at your potential job.

It never hurts to call the secretary or receptionist at the job’s location to find out what employees are expected to wear. Use good judgment in mirroring the current dress code.

If employees work on a factory floor and wear jeans, you’ll obviously want to dress up for your job interview.

Pull On those Panty Hose

Panty hose truly do finish off any outfit, especially when you are trying to make a good impression. If you are wearing slacks to an interview, you can get away with knee-high hose.

Panty hose is mandatory if you are wearing a skirt. Make sure you choose sheer panty hose so that if you decide to wear sandals or peep-toe shoes, you don’t have uneven lines showing around the toes.

Dress Conservatively

Even if today’s styles embrace miniskirts and plunging necklines, that doesn’t mean it makes it appropriate to wear the latest fashions to a job interview.

You also want to make sure your clothes aren’t so tight that they could be a second skin. Conservative styles and subtle colors make a clean, professional impression.

Check for Damage

When you select the clothes you want to wear, including panty hose, be sure to check for loose threads, holes, tears or runs.

Even if you don’t remember any damage on your clothing, there could still be something you missed.

Iron your Clothes

Nothing says lazy and apathetic like a wrinkled appearance.

Potential employers won’t even consider someone who didn’t take the time to pull out the iron and ironing board to prepare for their interview. Take pride in your appearance. It matters.

Apply Light Makeup and Limit the Jewelry

Dramatic eyes, earrings and tattoos all have their place, but it’s not at a job interview. Forego the powder blue eye shadow and keep your makeup neutral in browns and tans.

If you have multiple piercings, pick your favorite and take out the rest for the interview. You might want to cover up any tattoos if you have a lot or if any are offensive.

Freshen Up

Be sure to have a fresh haircut and check your nails to see if they need attention before your interview.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a manicure. Pull out your emery board and clean up the edges.

Don’t Distract from Your Qualifications

The last thing you want to do is wear or bring something that will draw unwanted attention away from your qualifications for the job.

Don’t wear bright colors or bring your favorite handbag glitzed up with sequins. Conservative is the best option in everything you choose when preparing your look for a job interview.
