Simple Tips to Prevent and Fight Off Colds and Flu

Women are more likely to suffer from colds and flu than men. It’s annoying but there are some things that you can do to help your body fight infections. One of those is to prevent it – and that doesn’t mean avoid those who already have a cold!

Have a Good Hygiene Routine

You don’t always catch a cold because you’re sat next to someone who has one! A lot of people catch a cold because their hygiene routine isn’t exactly the best.

You will be surprised how many germs are on the computer, the desk and even door handles. Wash your hands after using the toilet and before you eat any food!

Avoid Touching Your Face

Avoid spreading the germs from the workspace to your body. They will sit on your hands but if you touch your face, guess where those nasty critters go!

Don’t touch your face as much as possible without washing your hands first. You could also have some antibacterial gel on your desk to help kill off the germs on your hands.

Limit Your Alcohol Intake

One glass of wine or a pint of beer isn’t going to do you much harm but limit the amount that you drink.

The alcohol limits the amount that your white blood cells can do, which means they can’t fight off the infections as well as usual. You will be more susceptible to colds and flu if you drink a lot.

Vitamin C Isn’t Everything

You’ve probably heard that vitamin C is great for fighting colds and flu. While it does help to boost the immune system, that’s for preventing illnesses.

It isn’t the only thing that helps, either. You will need to have a full healthy diet and not just rely on one vitamin or mineral to prevent your cold, flu or any other illness.

Yes, drink orange juice but take other precautions and steps to fight the infection.

Get Enough Sleep

Your immune system only works when you sleep. That means one thing – you need sleep if you want to fight and prevent infections. Experts recommend that you get between six and eight hours of sleep a night.

You will know the best for your body. Make sure you get enough sleep so your body has the chance to protect you as much as possible.

When you are ill, get more sleep than you usually would to give yourself a fighting chance!

Have More Antioxidants

Antioxidants are great for fighting free radicals and helping to repair the damage of cells. They are also great for helping the immune system.

While focusing on vitamin C and other nutrients, make sure you get plenty of antioxidants. They are in the bright and bold coloured fruit and vegetables, such as raspberries and blueberries.

Invest in Having a Humidifier

Scientists have found that a humidifier can help to prevent colds and flu.

This is likely because the air is thick, meaning it is harder for the bacteria to float around.
