Tips for Decluttering Your Kitchen

The New Year is coming and it is a time to think about decluttering your home. It is best to start with one room at a time, and the kitchen is often a good place to start. It is one of the most commonly used rooms, and you want it to be in an organised state to enjoy being there. Here are some tips to declutter and organise the kitchen.

Have a Clear Out

Remove everything from the cupboards and clear out all the things that you don’t need. Check the labels on the items you have in the cupboard and bin those that are past the date. If they’re still in date but you really don’t want them, consider donating them to a local food bank. Look at all the items for cooking that you have and make the decision whether you really need them all.

Wash the Cupboards

No matter how clean you are, the cupboards will start to get dirty. This is especially the case for those that house potatoes and other root vegetables. Clean the cupboards down with warm soapy water and think about their uses as you do it.

Give Each Cupboard a Use

Before you put anything away, make sure each cupboard has a use. This will help you find some organisation within the room. You could have the cupboard under the sink for the bleach and other cleaning products, while the cupboards close to the cooker are for pans and baking trays. If you need to, create sticky labels to put on the cupboard doors so you know where everything is.

Organise the Food Jars

Don’t just put all the food jars and cans back in the cupboard. Organise them so they are in an easy to reach way. Have the bottom shelf for the tins and jars that you use on a daily basis, so they are easy to reach. Put anything that is used less frequently higher up. That way everything is really easy to just grab and go.

Have a Cupboard for the Seasonal Items

You probably have seasonal items in the home. It could be baking trays in the shape of Christmas trees or cookie cutters in the shape of Halloween pumpkins. Designate a specific cupboard for these. If you don’t have the space, opt for a high shelf to keep them out of reach. That way, you only see them when you go to look for them.

Invest in Counter Top Holders

If you don’t have blocks for your sharp knives, now is the time to get one. You should also have holders for your main large utensils, like the spatula and whisk. This will make cooking much easier and quicker, since you are not looking all over the kitchen for the one item that you require. It is also worth getting specific holders for your tea, coffee, and sugar etc. These will put everything in one place so it makes it easier to grab and go.
