Handling Relationships During Depression

Suffering from depression is difficult. You don’t want to eat, can’t sleep and you certainly don’t want to talk to people. Your relationships can really suffer. Your boyfriend doesn’t feel loved, your friends feel abandoned and your family just wants to know how to help you. You need some help handling your relationships during your depression, and here are six tips to get you started.

Keep Things Short and Sweet

Focus on the smaller trips out and visits with your friends. Ring up your friend and say you have half an hour and would like to spend some time with her.

By making it clear you only have half an hour and you’re choosing it to spend time with her, she will love you for it and be conscious about keeping to your timeframe. It could be a trip to the coffee shop or some time out at the park. You will soon find you feel happier by socialising.

Talk to Someone You Trust

Pick a friend or loved one you really trust and take the time to confide in them. It can be difficult to make that decision, but it is worth it in the end.

Your friends and family members will want to help you, and are more likely to be understanding when they know something is wrong. You may feel like something is silly, but it really isn’t. This is affecting your whole life!

Think About the Future

Do you really want to be in this situation five years in the future? Wouldn’t you like to picture yourself with a happy family, lots of great friends and constantly smiling?

Of course you would! But to get that future, you need to put the effort in now. It may seem like a lot of hard work, but you will get that future of your dreams.

They Have Feelings Too

It’s easy to become self-absorbed when you’re struggling with depression.

However, you need to take a step back and look at how your actions are affecting them. Remember that they have feelings. The way you’re acting could really hurt them, and you could end up losing them forever. Do you really want that to happen?

There’s No Need to Be Perfect

The best laid out plans go wrong, so never expect that you need to be perfect. You’re a mess right now, and there is no shame in admitting that.

Your friends want to see the real you, so stop trying to hide all the bad. Admit your imperfections and they will be there to support you through it.

Get Help If You Need It

Some people need professional help. This is especially the case when the relationships are breaking down. It’s really important to seek the help as soon as possible.

Find a doctor you feel comfortable with, and a method of therapy that suits you. There are different ways to combat depression, and it does not all involve taking a lot of drugs.
