Tips for Returning to Work After Children

Whether you’ve taken a couple of years out while your children reach school age or you’ve waited until they’ve left the nest, returning to work can be difficult. It can be a scary situation if you don’t prepare beforehand. Here are some tips to help you get ready and make the transition as easy as possible.

Think About Childcare

If the children aren’t old enough to look after themselves, you need to think about childcare. Who will look after your children during the summer holidays?

If their grandparents are close by and don’t work, this could be an option; however, you may have to look at nurseries and day cares in the area. Some places require registration and may have a waiting list so plan this part as early as possible.

Have a Backup Plan for Childcare

Anything can happen. The nursery may close down. It may have to close for the day due to strikes. If you rely on your parents or other family members, there may be another emergency.

If they’re at school, it may be closed for the day due to an emergency. Always have a backup plan for your childcare so you don’t have to take an unplanned day off work.

Create a Schedule for the Chores

The household chores will take a backseat when you return to work. Instead of saving everything for your day off, create a schedule. This should involve everyone – even toddlers can help with chores!

By creating a schedule, you will be able to see who needs to do the job per day, make sure it is done and enjoy your day off work.

Prepare Everything the Night Before

Lunches, uniforms and work clothes all need to be organised the night before. It only takes a few minutes to do and it’s best to prepare instead of rushing around on the morning.

This helps to avoid forgetting about anything, such as the gym kit, the meeting notes or a sandwich in the packed lunch.

Plan Out Your Dinners

It’s easy to get home from work and just not want to cook, especially if it’s been a long day. It leads to buying takeaways and spending money that would be better spent in other ways.

If you plan out your dinners, you’ll make sure you have the food you need in the house and it reduces the chance of buying takeaways.

Don’t Worry About Your Children Too Much

Mums worry about their children all the time but when you’re at work try to keep your mind off things.

The nursery will call if there is a problem. Remember that going to a day care and spending time with other people is good for your children. Keep that in mind every time you start worrying.

Sicknesses Happen

Someone will get sick in the house. Don’t worry too much about taking time off work for the odd sickness now and then; good bosses understand.

However, don’t abuse the system and try to arrange for alternate travel with dad, grandparents and other family members that love your children when they’re sick.
