Top Tips to Be Successful in a “Man’s” Job

There are some roles in life that are seen as a “man’s” job. These include the engineering, truck driving and science work. That doesn’t mean you have to let them be. Women can be successful. There are female colonels in the army and there are women doctors, lawyers and engineers. The trick is to prove your worth to be successful.

Do Something You’re Passionate About

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you have to do it. Choose a career that you’re passionate about.

If that so happens to fall into a category that is traditionally a man’s place of work, don’t think about that; put all your passion into your career choice. Passion leads to better grades and more experience and chance of being hired.

Put In the Extra Work

Don’t be afraid to read the extra books, put in the extra hours or learn something that your teacher or boss hasn’t told you to.

This shows initiative and that you’re a promising person in the future. It shows that you’re willing to learn something new should your boss need it in the future and he’s more likely to call on you than the men in the workplace.

Share Your Accomplishments

Don’t be afraid to talk out loud about your accomplishments. Men do it and that’s how they often get ahead.

Share how you did something and how well it turned out in the end. You will soon get your boss’ attention and he’ll talk to you when he need something similar in the future.

Find a Mentor

You can’t do everything on your own and you don’t have to! Find a mentor within your field; someone who will guide and help you along your career journey.

This needs to be someone who has already proven success in themselves and others. Learn from the mistakes that your mentor made instead of making them yourself.

Show That You’re Confident

Indecisiveness is something that turns men away from choosing women. Don’t let that happen to you.

Show that you are confident in your nature and that you can make decisions. This will also serve you well in other areas of your field. However, watch out for that confidence turning into arrogance!

Watch What Your Male Counterparts Do

The men in your field will be able to make more mistakes than you and still succeed. Watch what they do, the mistakes they make and the accomplishments they gain.

Use them to your advantage to learn what to do and what to stay away from. It’s like having a mentor without the guiding – they just don’t know they’re helping you succeed!

Don’t Worry About Gender

Women who constantly worry about being in a male-dominated are more likely to fail. They second guess their actions and feel inadequate against the men in their field.

This comes across as lacking in confidence and like you don’t know your job. Don’t worry about your gender becoming an issue and it’s less likely to happen!
